ABC Trek – Day 1 – Nayapul to Ulleri

Tiny villages dot the landscape as you trek through Nepal.

We were supposed to be heading to Everest Base Camp, but weather cancelled flights for 5 days, stranding nearly 6000 people who are waiting for a flight to Lukla. We changed our plans to the ABC trek.

Day one of the Annapurna Base Camp trek is in the books. We are relaxing in our room before dinner at a tea house in Ulleri.

Tea houses provide places to eat and sleep along your route.

The hike 6.25 miles, 3573 feet of elevation gain (the continuous rock steps kicked my butt), final elevation 6738 feet.

Trekkers are instructed to wait on the uphill side of the trail when pack animals pass.

The hike started at the Annapurna Sanctuary permit station, weaved though the little town there, then suddenly spit us out on a steep rocky road which could have been anywhere in the US, if there weren’t 8000 meter peaks lurking just over the hillside next to us.

The start of our ABC journey weaved our way through a small village.

After stepping aside for numerous 4x4s, motorcycles and even the local bus, we turned left, dove down for our first cable bridge crossing, then started climbing seemingly never-ending, variable-height, rock steps.

Cable suspension bridges provide passage across the many valleys spread across the trek.
A peaceful sunset completed our first fay of trekking.
